Matthew 14:30 (NLT)
But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.
Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) is one of my favorite songs to listen to. It isn’t just a powerful song, but it’s a brilliant truthful message about trust and faith. When our problems are so enormous and so unfathomably deep, it is a comfort to know that the enormous and unfathomably infinite God is deeper and greater still.
Our lives can change in an instant, in the blink of an eye. One minute we can be perfectly healthy and the next minute we can be fighting for our lives in a hospital bed on life support. One moment can be enthralled with joy and happiness and the very next moment can be our “dark night of the soul.”
We often fear stepping out into the deep because we don’t know what’s going to happen. We don’t know how we’ll fare in the storm. We don’t know if we’ll sink or swim, walk on water or drown. We know in our minds that God is good and He is all powerful, but we don’t really know how much — until we step out into the water as He urges us all to do.
Stepping out into the ocean of our lives with God isn’t easy or pretty or predictable. You won’t understand it. You won’t comprehend why you can’t just sit on the shore and swish your feet in the water and live your quiet, cute Christian life. That’s not what God wants. He wants us to trust Him, to let Him take the wheel, and to believe that maybe, just maybe, He’s got something good in store for us.
Trust without borders. That’s what God wants. Not words of trust, not songs of trust, not sermons on trust, not neatly packaged lessons, seminars, or books on trust. He wants us all to trust Him — wholeheartedly, unreservedly, unshakably, unconditionally, totally and completely. God wants our hearts and with our hearts comes our trust and with our trust comes His grace.
The deeper God takes us, the stronger our faith gets. The more treacherous the waters are in our lives, the greater His grace gets. We have to let go. We can’t be in control. We don’t receive abounding grace to think about going deeper with God or to consider our options. We get it the moment we surrender and make up our minds to take God’s hand and go as deep as He wants to take us, as far as He wants to go, wherever He leads.
The sights you want to see, the life you want to live isn’t visible from the shore. It’s in the deep where the best lessons are taught and God’s glorious purpose for our lives is revealed. With your eyes on Jesus, there is no need to fear. Trusting Him to be Your guide, you will not go wrong. God never fails a person who dives in with complete trust. He works overtime to produce extraordinary, beautiful things in the lives of those who put their trust in Him.
“Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior.”
