As young adults, our parent tried to instill in us the culture of saving for a rainy day and as we grew older we were taught about how to plan for the future, when we start working, we are taught to plan for our retirement.
Some of us are lucky enough to have a “nest egg” for the day we stop working, something we can live on. Others have invested money in properties and some have invested time in terms of study and building a career.
So at one point or another, each one of us will invest in our future, but how much effort and time do we put into investing for our eternity ?
In relation to eternity, our time on earth is nothing more than a blink of an eye, and yet we allow it to consume us and put very little effort and time into what really matters.
Jesus taught, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:19-21). That is a mandate, not a recommendation. Invest in eternity!
How can we invest in eternity? We can live by kingdom principles instead of worldly principles. This is hard and is only possible when we choose to look up and beyond our short time on earth to an eternal perspective. We must realize and care that “our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20) and we must truly desire to “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” (Matthew 6:20)
The investment will be worth it. The payoff will be BIG!
