Read: Mark 9:2-4

And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. (v. 4)

A while back, I was asked to write a column twice a month for the local newspaper. I often take common, everyday occurrences and view them through the prism of the Christian faith. In the course of my writing, I decided to take an unapologetic biblical and Christ-centered approach. Soon I realized that not everyone agreed with my perspective. It became obvious to me from the online comments that not everyone respects the Bible or the Christian faith. Some of the attacks were even personal. The negative comments hurt so much, I considered quitting.

But I kept writing. As time went by, I started to receive all kinds of affirmations: people at church, neighbors, friends, and people in the community. Even people I didn’t know would walk up to me on the street and thank me for writing. What an encouragement these words were to me! And obviously I was encouraging them as well.

We all need encouragement. Even Jesus! As he journeyed on his way to Jerusalem, it was evident to Jesus that in order to fulfill his mission of salvation, he would have to suffer and die. The road ahead of him was not an easy one. But just at the right time, Jesus received the encouragement he needed from Moses and Elijah. Undeterred by the threats leveled at him, Jesus kept right on going.
