And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
My daughter was playing in a difficult volleyball game, and they were losing pretty bad to a bigger and stronger team. As I watched the game, I reminded her to play her best. My philosophy is that she doesn’t hand the game over because the other team looks intimidating. Even if her team loses the game, the opposing team is going to have to work for it because she’s not giving up before it’s over.
Sometimes this Christian walk is tough, and we may want to throw in the towel as well. We are tempted on every side to live for ourselves instead of living for God. We are pressed into prayer and Bible study so that we can stay close to God. We are burdened with the cares of our family and friends. We sometimes get tired of waiting on God to move on our behalf.
Yet we can never, never give up on God. We may fail in our efforts, but God never fails. There are many impossibilities that stand in our way, but nothing is impossible with God. We feel overwhelmed and broken, but God is with us and strengthens us according to His power. We can’t always understand what is going on around us, yet God knows the beginning to the end.
Because we are His children, we have hope, and hope doesn’t disappoint us (Romans 5:5, NRSV). Many situations will disappoint us, and people will let us down. However, the deep urging in our souls to move ahead comes from the Holy Spirit. He will cheer us forward in faith in spite of how we feel.
The Holy Spirit nudges us, reminds us, encourages us, and prepares us for the next step in our journey. We can’t give up because it gets hard. As followers of Jesus, we are spiritually gifted to see our situation beyond what we see in our natural eyes. There’s great peace and victory for us on the other side if we just keep pressing forward in faith. We are destined for overcoming the most difficult challenges because of God’s hand on our lives.
Dear Lord, I’m tempted to give up every single day. Yet I turn to You for renewed strength and vision to accomplish Your great will. I pray for Your presence to go with me along the way. Amen.
In His Service,
